landscapes and seascapes

In the quiet of the start or end of the day, the colors, and the calm (or not), and the beauty of nature really come through.

A Moment of Illumination, October 29, 2022

I posted this photo on my Instagram on New Years Day and touched it up a bit after. On that day I wrote, On this New Year Day, I wanted to find a shot that I hadn't worked on before that could maybe illustrate a narrative for the possibilities that 2023 could bring. So like this person in the bottom left that was looking for the incredible sunrise in Ocean City, Maryland, that didn't quite materialize, here they are now presented with another opportunity shining through the otherwise overcast sky to illuminate the water in front of them. And maybe offering other possibilities that they hadn't contemplated previously. I have no doubt that 2023 will offer each of us new opportunities and possibilities. Here's a toast to finding and grabbing the golden ones shining through the grayness.

Laguna Beach Looking North,
September 11, 2022

Playing a little catch up here. On my first night on the west coast, took the opportunity for a late night excursion to Laguna Beach. It was quiet and pretty empty, as compared to what it looks like during the day. The largely full Moon was rising, which gave the clouds some particular shimmer in these 20 second shots.

Laguna Beach Looking South,

Watching the Moon and Jupiter, September 10, 2022

While in Rehoboth Beach, DE, in support of a high school friend and attending the Walk to Defeat ALS, I got up early to catch the Moon and Jupiter setting as viewed from the Rehoboth Bay Sailing Association. I used a remote interval timer to begin shooting while I walked onto the dock and position in the image.

Hunter Moon Setting over Lake Ashby, October 21, 2021

After photographing the Hunter Moon rising over the Jefferson Memorial, I captured the full Hunter Moon setting over Lake Ashby the following morning.

Sunrise on Rehoboth Beach, September 11, 2021

While in Rehoboth Beach, DE, in support of a high school friend and attending the Walk to Defeat ALS, I headed to the beach early enough to catch the cloudless sunrise.

The Moon and Venus Watching the Sunset, September 10, 2021

While in Rehoboth Beach, DE, in support of a high school friend and attending the Walk to Defeat ALS, I stopped in at the Rehoboth Bay Sailing Association and after capturing the shot to the right, waited around for the Moon and Venus to make an appearance.

Sunset Sailing on Rehoboth Bay, September 10, 2021

While in Rehoboth Beach, DE, in support of a high school friend and attending the Walk to Defeat ALS, I stopped in at the Rehoboth Bay Sailing Association in time to capture this shot as the Sun was dropping below the horizon.

Thunderstorms, August 27, 2021

This is a composite of four images capturing two thunderstorms looking east from H. M. Pearson Elementary School near Calverton, VA, taken just before midnight.

Thunderstorm at Lake Ashby, August 27, 2021

Sometimes nature provides you the perfect shot and you just need to be lucky enough to be there with the camera running and looking in the right spot. Taken a couple hours earlier than the next one, this thunderstorm was captured looking to the southeast from the dam at Lake Ashby near Warrenton, VA.

Sunrise, March 6, 2021

I stayed out there this morning behind The Nokesville School in Nokesville, VA, to get shots of the approaching sunrise. Click here for a .gif covering 30 minutes of the approaching sunrise (it is a large file, so please be patient).

Stack a few neutral density filters on a wide-angle lens and you get this really cool effect.
