At the end of July 2023 we set out on a little jaunt that took us up and over the top of Maine and back home. Eight different stops in eight nights. Just a few of the shots taken during that trip.

cross country road trip
From June 19th through July 5th 2021, we drove across the country and back. It was a great trip and if you've never driven across this wonderful country, you really need to do it--just to see how wondrous and get an appreciation you just can't get on a plane flight. We religiously followed Route 50 (except where is was closed in western Colorado) from the intersection of Route 15 in Virginia to its end in Sacramento. After a few nights with friends in California, we headed back east, generally following Route 10 to New Orleans before heading back towards home. And other than deciding/having to buy a new car on day 13, the trip went just as planned and we fun with friends and saw some places we had never seen before. The photos that follow are just a handful or two or four of the nearly 700 shots that I recorded/saved chronicling some of the highlights, as seen through my camera's lens, of the trip. There were plenty more cell phone shots, which consisted of a lot of state crossings and laughs. In all, we drove in 20 states, and slept in 13. It was a really good time!
Not Too Much Farther, Chillicothe, OH, June 19, 2021
Like they knew it was our first day stop! Mural on U.S. Route 50 in the center of downtown Chillicothe, Ohio.
Ross County Government Building, Chillicothe, OH, June 19, 2021
The Moon provided some back-lighting for the directional vain on top of the Ross County Government Building in Chillicothe, Ohio.
MeerKat Grouping, Cincinnati Zoo, OH, June 20, 2021
Second day on the road and stopped for a few hours to take in the zoo. Nothing more needs to be said about these playful, not rodents--mongooses.

The backlit statue of Father Pierre Gibault creates a creepy vision in front of the Old Cathedral, Basilica of St. Francis Xavier.

Lincoln Memorial Bridge, Vincennes, IN, June 20, 2021
This is what happens when you're out way later than you should and the result of getting out of the way of an oncoming car while taking a time-lapse photo from the middle of the road on the Lincoln Memorial Bridge over the Wabash River that separates Illinois from Indiana.
Missouri State Capitol, Jefferson City, MO, June 21, 2021
We could see the capitol dome in the distance and since the road went right through, we decided to take a break and wander around a bit. Discovered the Lewis and Clark trailhead was located here too.
Just Us, Clover Dell Park Lake, Sedalia, MO, June 21, 2021
Just wandering around looking for something interesting to explore and followed the signs to the Clover Dell Park Lake. Nice little spot to roam after dinner.
Sands Lake Sunset, Salida, Colorado, June 23, 2021
A view of the sunset from the Sands Lake State Wildlife Area. I'm pretty sure that is Mt. Shavano in the distance.
Sands Lake Moonrise, Salida, Colorado, June 23, 2021
Sands Lake is really more of a big pond, so went to the other side to catch the full Moon rising.
Gunnison River Valley, Colorado, June 24, 2021
Route 50 was closed just after crossing over to the south side of the Gunnison River, and all traffic was diverted to Route 92 on the north side, which turned out to be a great ride and well worth the extra time. We stopped at this overlook and took a few shots of the river valley below. This one is looking back to the east.
Curecanti Needle and Gunnison River, Colorado, June 24, 2021
From the scenic overlook off of Route 92 and looking to the southwest. You can read about the needle here.

Not much at all in this stopping place. But, good Mexican restaurant right across the street from the hotel and a really nice sunset.
The Loneliest Road in America, June 25, 2021
We can vouch for the title. US Route 50 out of Utah and into Nevada is desolate, to say the least. There are tiny towns a couple hundred miles apart but, otherwise, there are very few people out there! We are blessed that the weather was mild and the car didn't quit out here.
Lake Tahoe Sunset, June 25, 2021
Just a peaceful, cloudless sunset over the lake.
Zinfandel at Limerick Lane Cellars, June 26, 2021

Sometimes you just have to stop and photograph the roses.
Queen Creek Arch Bridge, Superior, AZ, June 30, 2021
Before the car decided to have its issue, we were happily motoring along and pulled over to pick up some rocks (you'll have to ask), and I took this panoramic shot looking back towards the bridge we had just crossed.
The Wife at Oak Alley Plantation, July 3, 2021
"If only it were ours!" Right! It was a rainy day, but nice visit to Oak Alley Plantation on the Mississippi River outside of New Orleans.
Sunset Cruise on the Tennessee River, July 4, 2021
No clouds made for a very clean, somewhat "boring," sunset, but nice, quiet evening, with some fireworks in the area.
Venus (and Mars) over Tennessee River, Chattanooga, July 4, 2021
Just after sunset, Venus was brilliant, and Mars is on about a 45 degree angle up and to the left. Mars is about 2/3 towards the other side of the Sun as seen from the Earth at this time, and therefore not very bright.
